What home charger does the Mercedes-Benz EQS need?
| Model years | Trims | Charger | Breaker |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2027 | all trims | 40 A | 50 A |
| 2026 | 580 | 48 A | 60 A |
| 2026 | 400, 450, 550, 680 Maybach | 40 A | 50 A |
| 2024-2025 | 580 | 48 A | 60 A |
| 2024-2025 | 450, 680 Maybach, AMG EQS | 40 A | 50 A |
| 2023 | 580 | 48 A | 60 A |
| 2023 | 450 | 40 A | 50 A |
| 2022 | 580 | 48 A | 60 A |
| 2022 | 450, AMG EQS | 40 A | 50 A |
It depends on the version. From 2022 through 2026, the Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 accepts 11.5 kW and takes a 48 A charger on a 60 A breaker. The other EQS versions, including the 450, the AMG and the Maybach, accept 9.6 kW and take a 40 A charger on a 50 A breaker. For 2027, every EQS is a 40 A car.
Why the amperage matters
Buying a 48 A charger for a 40 A EQS gains nothing, because the car stops at 40 A. For a 580, the 48 A unit gets the full rate of up to 32 to 33 miles of range per hour. On the 2027 cars, a 32 A charger brings the rate from 22 to 23 miles per hour down to 18.
Charging time by model year
| Year | EPA range | Level 2, miles per hour | Level 2, empty to full | 120 V, miles per hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2027 | 312 to 317 mi | 22 to 23 | 13.9 to 14 h | 3.3 to 3.4 |
| 2026 | 300 to 390 mi | 22 to 32 | 11.5 to 14 h | 3.3 to 4.2 |
| 2025 | 302 to 390 mi | 22 to 32 | 11.6 to 14.1 h | 3.3 to 4.2 |
| 2024 | 280 to 352 mi | 23 to 33 | 10.5 to 14 h | 3.4 to 4.1 |
| 2023 | 285 to 340 mi | 27 to 31 | 10.4 to 11 h | 3.4 to 4.6 |
| 2022 | 277 to 350 mi | 22 to 32 | 10.5 to 12.8 h | 3.3 to 4.1 |
Level 2 figures assume a charger that supplies the car's full rate. Where a year shows a range, it spans that year's trims.
The 580 kept its faster charger through 2026. Full charges take anywhere from 10.4 to 14.1 hours depending on year and version, which is long, but the EQS has a very large battery and up to 390 miles of range. The 2027 cars take 13.9 to 14 hours.
What it costs to charge at home
At the U.S. average residential rate of 18.19¢ per kWh, the 2027 Mercedes-Benz EQS costs 7.6 to 7.8¢ a mile to charge at home. A full charge from empty comes to about $24, and 37 miles a day to about $86 to $88 a month. EPA measures energy use at the wall, so the energy lost while charging is already counted. Rates run from 12.36¢ in North Dakota to 46.28¢ in Hawaii, and the cost guide has every state.
What the install involves
Check which version you have before calling the electrician. A 48 A charger for a 580 needs a 60 A breaker and a hardwired connection. A 40 A charger for the other versions needs a 50 A breaker and can plug into a NEMA 14-50 outlet.
- 48 A charger: 60 A breaker, hardwired, because no household receptacle is rated for a 48 A charger.
- 40 A charger: 50 A breaker, NEMA 14-50 outlet.
- Dryer outlet: a 4-prong NEMA 14-30 on a 30 A breaker can run a 24 A charger. That adds about 13 to 14 miles of range per hour to the 2027 Mercedes-Benz EQS, or 130 to 140 in a 10-hour night. What to check first.
- Charge port, 2022-2024: J1772. Every non-Tesla EV sold in North America through 2024 uses the J1772 connector for AC Level 2 charging.
- Charge port, 2025-2027: J1772. From 2025 the industry is moving to the NACS port, and makers switch at different times. Some of these cars have a J1772 port and some have NACS with an adapter, so look at the port on your own car before choosing a charger's plug.
