What home charger does the Toyota bZ and bZ4X need?
| Model years | Trims | Charger | Breaker |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | all trims | 48 A | 60 A |
| 2023-2025 | all trims | 32 A | 40 A |
It depends on the year. The 2023 to 2025 Toyota bZ4X has a 6.6 kW onboard charger and needs only a 32 A charger on a 40 A breaker. The renamed 2026 bZ accepts 11.0 kW and takes a 48 A charger on a 60 A breaker.
Why the amperage matters
A 48 A charger won't speed up a bZ4X, since it stops at 32 A. On a 2026 bZ the bigger unit is worth it: it adds 38 to 43 miles of range per hour at 48 A, and 32 to 36 on a 40 A charger.
Charging time by model year
| Year | EPA range | Level 2, miles per hour | Level 2, empty to full | 120 V, miles per hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 236 to 314 mi | 38 to 43 | 7.3 to 7.4 h | 5 to 5.6 |
| 2025 | 222 to 252 mi | 23 | 10.8 h | 5.1 |
| 2024 | 222 to 252 mi | 23 | 10.8 h | 5.1 |
| 2023 | 222 to 252 mi | 23 | 10.8 h | 5.1 |
Level 2 figures assume a charger that supplies the car's full rate. Where a year shows a range, it spans that year's trims.
Toyota's 2026 update transformed home charging. A 2023 to 2025 bZ4X adds 23 miles of range per hour and needs 10.8 hours from empty. A 2026 bZ fills in 7.3 to 7.4 hours with up to 314 miles of range.
What it costs to charge at home
At the U.S. average residential rate of 18.19¢ per kWh, the 2026 Toyota bZ and bZ4X costs 4.6 to 5.6¢ a mile to charge at home. A full charge from empty comes to about $11 to $15, and 37 miles a day to about $52 to $63 a month. EPA measures energy use at the wall, so the energy lost while charging is already counted. Rates run from 12.36¢ in North Dakota to 46.28¢ in Hawaii, and the cost guide has every state.
What the install involves
For a bZ4X, a 32 A charger on a 40 A breaker is an easy install and can plug into a NEMA 14-50 outlet. For a 2026 bZ, the 48 A charger must be hardwired to a 60 A breaker. If you might trade up, wiring for 48 A now saves a second job.
- 48 A charger: 60 A breaker, hardwired, because no household receptacle is rated for a 48 A charger.
- 32 A charger: 40 A breaker, NEMA 14-50 outlet on a 40 A breaker, or hardwired.
- Dryer outlet: a 4-prong NEMA 14-30 on a 30 A breaker can run a 24 A charger. That adds about 19 to 22 miles of range per hour to the 2026 Toyota bZ and bZ4X, or 190 to 220 in a 10-hour night. What to check first.
- Charge port, 2023-2024: J1772. Every non-Tesla EV sold in North America through 2024 uses the J1772 connector for AC Level 2 charging.
- Charge port, 2025-2026: J1772. From 2025 the industry is moving to the NACS port, and makers switch at different times. Some of these cars have a J1772 port and some have NACS with an adapter, so look at the port on your own car before choosing a charger's plug.

Common questions
- Does a used Toyota bZ4X need a different charger from a 2026 bZ?
- It only uses 32 A, while the 2026 bZ uses 48 A. A 48 A charger works for both, but the bZ4X charges no faster on it.
- How long does a Toyota bZ take to charge from empty?
- About 7.3 to 7.4 hours for a 2026 bZ and 10.8 hours for a 2023 to 2025 bZ4X.
- Can a Toyota bZ4X use a NEMA 14-50 outlet?
- Yes. A 32 A plug-in charger on a 14-50 outlet with a 40 A breaker suits it well.
- How much does a 120 V outlet add to a Toyota bZ?
- About 5 to 5.6 miles of range per hour.
