What home charger does the Porsche Taycan need?
| Model years | Trims | Charger | Breaker |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2020-2026 | with the optional 19.2 kW charger | 80 A | 100 A |
| 2020-2026 | with the standard 11 kW charger | 48 A | 60 A |
Most Porsche Taycans take a 48 A charger on a 60 A breaker, because the standard onboard charger accepts 11 kW. Cars fitted with the optional 19.2 kW onboard charger can use an 80 A charger on a 100 A breaker, and charge much faster on one.
Why the amperage matters
The optional charger is the whole question here. On a standard car, anything above 48 A is wasted, since the car stops there. On a car with the 19.2 kW unit, an 80 A charger lets a 2026 add 44 to 53 miles of range per hour, while a 48 A charger holds it to about 26 to 32.
Charging time by model year
| Year | EPA range | Level 2, miles per hour | Level 2, empty to full | 120 V, miles per hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 251 to 315 mi | 44 to 53* | 5 to 6 h* | 3.3 to 4 |
| 2025 | 252 to 318 mi | 44 to 53* | 5 to 6.1 h* | 3.3 to 4 |
| 2024 | 206 to 246 mi | 43 to 47* | 5.1 to 5.2 h* | 3.2 to 3.5 |
| 2023 | 206 to 246 mi | 43 to 47* | 4.3 to 5.2 h* | 3.2 to 3.6 |
| 2022 | 199 to 246 mi | 40 to 47* | 4.8 to 5.3 h* | 3 to 3.5 |
| 2021 | 199 to 227 mi | 40 to 44* | 4.8 to 5.3 h* | 3 to 3.3 |
| 2020 | 192 to 203 mi | 38 to 39* | 5 to 5.2 h* | 2.9 to 3 |
Level 2 figures assume a charger that supplies the car's full rate. Where a year shows a range, it spans that year's trims. * Fastest trim. The lower-amperage trims take proportionally longer.
Porsche made the 19.2 kW charger available on US Taycans and offered it as a retrofit for earlier cars, so the model year alone doesn't settle it. With the faster charger, a Taycan fills from empty in about 5 to 6 hours. Range has grown from 192 to 203 miles on the 2020 cars to as much as 318 on the 2025.
What it costs to charge at home
At the U.S. average residential rate of 18.19¢ per kWh, the 2026 Porsche Taycan costs 6.6 to 7.9¢ a mile to charge at home. A full charge from empty comes to about $18 to $21, and 37 miles a day to about $74 to $89 a month. EPA measures energy use at the wall, so the energy lost while charging is already counted. Rates run from 12.36¢ in North Dakota to 46.28¢ in Hawaii, and the cost guide has every state.
What the install involves
Find out which charger your car has before paying for a 100 A circuit. The window sticker or build sheet lists the 19.2 kW option, and a Porsche dealer can confirm whether a retrofit was done. An 80 A charger needs a 100 A breaker and hardwiring, and many homes need panel work to add it. A 48 A charger on a 60 A breaker is the easier job and suits any Taycan.
- 80 A charger: 100 A breaker, hardwired only.
- 48 A charger: 60 A breaker, hardwired, because no household receptacle is rated for a 48 A charger.
- Dryer outlet: a 4-prong NEMA 14-30 on a 30 A breaker can run a 24 A charger. That adds about 13 to 16 miles of range per hour to the 2026 Porsche Taycan, or 130 to 160 in a 10-hour night. What to check first.
- Charge port, 2020-2024: J1772. Every non-Tesla EV sold in North America through 2024 uses the J1772 connector for AC Level 2 charging.
- Charge port, 2025-2026: J1772. From 2025 the industry is moving to the NACS port, and makers switch at different times. Some of these cars have a J1772 port and some have NACS with an adapter, so look at the port on your own car before choosing a charger's plug.
Chargers that fit the Porsche Taycan
Smallest adequate unit first. Every amp above what the car accepts is capacity it never uses.
80 A, for the 2020-2026 Taycan with the optional 19.2 kW charger
One of the few home units that can feed an 80 A car. Needs a 100 A circuit.
48 A, for the 2020-2026 Taycan with the standard 11 kW charger
Energy monitoring built in. Hardwire it for the full 48 A.
Compact unit, good for tight garages.
Adjustable from 16 A to 50 A in the app, which helps if your panel is tight.

Common questions
- How do I know if my Porsche Taycan has the 19.2 kW onboard charger?
- Check the window sticker or build sheet for the option, or ask a Porsche dealer, who can also tell you whether a retrofit was done.
- Is an 80 A charger worth it for a Porsche Taycan?
- Only with the 19.2 kW onboard charger. Without it, the car draws 48 A no matter how big the charger is.
- How long does a Porsche Taycan take to charge at home?
- About 5 to 6 hours from empty with the 19.2 kW charger on an 80 A unit. A standard car on a 48 A charger takes considerably longer.
